Natural Beauty – Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island is famed for its idyllic beauty and exclusivity (only 400 tourists may visit at a time). Trust me when I say that the moment you step off the plane is precisely like walking into a real-life nature documentary. The sub-tropical climate combined with limited human interference has created a marvelous marine ecosystem here. Think; crystal clear lagoons filled with a phenomenal array of sea life, colourful coral formations and swathes of verdant sea grass. The mountainous backdrop adds a Jurassic feel to this UNESCO World Heritage-listed island and it’s well worth taking a guided hike to explore the region from an elevated vantage point.

When I first arrived, I easily imagined the great Sir David Attenborough’s voice narrating my visual experience. Watching the variety of bird-life at Ned’s Beach was mesmerising to say the least – children and adults alike agree. Many bird species migrate here plus there are a few endemic ones too. Who knew a flightless Woodhen would prove to be my new best friend?

To be honest, I had a preconceived notion that Lord Howe was the domain of wealthy city folk only but ahem (this hurts to admit), I was wrong. Sure, there are a few luxurious resort enclaves (hello, Capella Lodge) but by and large, it’s a relaxed nature haven, perfect for those who are keen to turn up, tune in and drop out of society. Which is exactly what I did at the aptly named Ebbtide Apartments. So, if seaside seafood barbeques, an unhurried local atmosphere, marine adventures and restful island afternoons appeal to you, Lord Howe Island will make those holiday dreams a genuine reality.

Note: Surfers will want to take their board with them too. There are a few secret-ish surf breaks (pending swell direction) on Lord Howe Island but remember the locals (although friendly) would probably prefer to keep it that way. Show respect in the water, wait your turn for a wave and you’ll have a great day.

Lovers of the great outdoors adore the activities on offer here such as world-class offshore fishing. Book yourself a charter boat excursion and if the weather permits, cast a line at Balls Pyramid (the world’s tallest sea stack juts out from the Pacific at a towering 550m). Divers (from all over the globe) have this destination dialled in to see schools of Violet Sweep, Rainbow Runners, Amberjack, Wahoo and huge marlins. Note: rare fish species, like Spanish Dancers and Galapagos Whalers also make these waters home.

Prefer to take it slow? Do as I do and amble from your accommodation to the easily accessible glass-bottom boats that skim the surface of the lagoon gifting guests enchanting underwater vistas – it’s the perfect example of an immersive experience that requires minimum effort.

Want to get high? Take a hike and climb the summit of Mt Gower (its exotic profile mimics the Tahitian isles in the right light) with the legendary walking guide and 5th generation islander, Mr Jack Schick. If you’re not impressed with Jack’s superior knowledge of the local wildlife and dramatic landscapes and refuse to be regaled by his engaging storytelling, I’ll buy you a pint. In any case, Sir David Attenborough reckons he’s the unofficial lord of Lord Howe Island and so do I.

Getting There

Eastern Air Services regularly flies direct to LHI from Port Macquarie and the Gold Coast. Alternatively, Qantas zips over from Sydney bi-weekly. Option 3. Commandeer a yacht with an expert skipper at the helm and set sail from mainland Australia.
