Hotel Review: Komune Resort & Beach Club, Bali

RESORT OVERVIEW

Komune Resort and Beach Club Bali is everything I thought it would be and more. Upon arrival I was fascinated with the spaciously landscaped layout and overall resort design. Tropical, modern and most inviting. The property must have been at at least 80% capacity and yet it felt totally peaceful and relatively uncrowded throughout my stay. It’s location, directly in front of the world famous ‘Keramas’ surf break was a major draw card, as was its secluded vibe, well away from the (nowadays) consistent hustle of Bali’s tourist hot spots such as Seminyak.

I loved escaping to the tranquil pool area (adults only) adjacent to the health hub hive early in the morning (after a surf check from my private beachfront balcony of course) and was happy to up the ante and head to the Beach Club when the need for a Bloody Mary and a stacked omelette hit, which was ahem, fairly often ;)

The food was outstanding, no word of a lie, I enthusiastically ate my way around each venue and still didn’t manage to sample everything from the extensively tempting menus.

Anyway, feel free to read on for a detailed account of Komune Bali’s epic facilities including adrenaline charged night surfing, the ethereal day spa, a super fun skate park, Komune weddings, room reviews and the many cuisine highlights.

KOMUNE ROOMS

Luxury beachfront pool suites (pictured), villas and resort rooms are all on offer for you. Families may like to take up residence in an elegant yet welcoming villa or book adjoining resort rooms nestled amid the exotic garden space and nearby to the ample kids area features; an outdoor playground and a full size skate bowl no less.

For the purpose of my stay I selected the luxe beachfront pool suite. To be honest, I couldn’t fault it. Asides from the million door view out front of the room, I really liked the sleek bathroom, complete with free standing marble bath and vast shower space. The huge flat screen TV didn’t really get a look in from me, my partner however was often content to chill on the king size bed (yes to luxury linen) in the afternoon and watch flicks post surfing.

I’d usually be found (at any hour) floating in the horizon edge pool with a cocktail (Bellini in the morn and a Martini in the eve) in hand and a smile on my dial. Come sunset it’s lovely to relax on the deck in the privacy of the suites day bed and admire the lovely vista that overlooks Lombok Strait, Nusa Lembongan Island and all the action of the Keramas surf break.

SURFING KERAMAS

Picking up plenty of east coast indo swell over its lava reef, the Keramas wave is famed for its high octane ramp sections and fast barrels. Tip: the surf here often performs better on an incoming high tide with light winds.

The WSL (world surf league) hosts a men’s and women’s championship tour event here annually in May, as such the crowds are pretty large around this time of year. Spectators are thrilled to have an excellent vantage point to witness the globes best surfers compete for the notable title of ‘winner’ at the Bali Pro. Note: The pool party vibe is proper alive during this time!

Komune offers guests the opportunity to surf at night under powerful flood lights (swell conditions pending). It’s a uniquely special bucket list experience for adventurous surfers and a world first permanent night surfing installation. Bookings ensure only 6 surfers share the waves at night, so you can thrive on the rippable right hand reef breaks and deep Keramas barrels without the crowds.

DINING VENUES

Food glorious food. I’ll admit it has been some years since I had last visited beautiful Bali and man oh man was I suitably impressed by the high standard of decadent food offerings here at Komune.

Breakfast at the Beach Club was consistently great. Service on point and ample menu choices. The coffee too was sturdy yet smooth, everyday I would order one and take up my prized position by the sand on a beanbag and watch the waves work their magic, fortunately it was offshore and glassy everyday throughout my stay!

By lunch I’d be well ready to hook into lighter menu favourites including; Peking Duck Rolls, Fresh Ceviche, Mini Rendang Taco’s (do it) and/or Caesar Salad Wraps before edging forward toward the fresh catch of the day, a 250gram surfer steak or any of the epic pizza and pastas dishes that will tempt you in eventually.

My partner and I often reserved a table a little away from the main Beach Club bar area and enjoyed romantic beachfront sunset dinner’s filled with both the finest Indonesian delights and international food offerings. Tip: Mai Tai’s match just about anything ;)

Highly recommended dishes; Pan Seared Komune Duck -wild honey glazed duck breast with hand made sweet potato gnocchi, Parmesan pesto, baby arugula, long spring roll and oriental sauce. Kare Ayam -traditional Indonesian yellow chicken curry served in a coconut with steamed Tabanan rice. Roasted Cauliflower Salad – Cauli trees fire roasted and drizzled with grounddried Indian spice seeds mixed in yoghurt topped with almond slivers.

Note: The Health Hub restaurant really is a the place to dine if you’re seeking nourishing dishes for breakfast lunch and dinner in a serene setting. There’s a mass array of delightfully filling vegetarian meals alongside tender steaks, fresh local seafood plates and zesty salad options.

WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

She said yes! Great, now get planning to host a wonderful destination wedding and vacation in one at Komune Resort & Beach Club. I witnessed one blushing bride from the corner of my eye, walk down a beachfront garden aisle to be greeted by a proud groom boasting a gratuitous smile. Since, I am a travel writer I decided to speak briefly with the wedding coordinator here who warmly explained just how straightforward and relatively affordable a wedding is to host here. Contact them direct if you’re in the market to have your big day book ended by amazing waves. NB: The resort would also be great for events and celebrations of any caliber given their stunning location and professional attention to detail.

YOUTH ENTERTAINMENT

How good is that skate set up (pictured above)? Aka the Fruit Bowl. Kids, teens and adults alike love to ride here. A neat option if the waves aren’t firing indeed. Naturally, if the surf is pumping and a safe size, your groms will be out from dawn to dusk. Such is the adrenaline rush of the Keramas break.

Age appropriate movies are projected nightly on a screen adjacent to the Beach Club which grants parents the freedom to enjoy their evening meal and after dinner drinks. Plus, there’s a mini kids club with daily activities for the little ones. Private babysitters are available to book through resort reception at very reasonable rates too.
