Surf Aid

SURFAID – the backstory to this progressive charity organization.

The SurfAid Cup is the signature fundraiser for SurfAid globally. The first competition
was held in 2011 and has grown into an event series including seven events in Australia and the US. There have been many amazing firsts at SurfAid, including being founded by the first doctor to set foot in the Mentawai islands and the first organization to introduce solar powered drip irrigation projects to combat malnutrition in Sumbawa. Now SurfAid is partnering with the URBNSURF for an entirely different kind of first.

SURF AID 1

“SurfAid’s core mission is to save and improve the lives of women and children in remote areas of Indonesia, Solomon Islands and Baja – areas connected to us through surfing. Our geographical focus on the heartlands of surfing where few visitors but surfers go, make SurfAid unique. We specialise in working in extremely isolated villages where
mothers and children routinely die from preventable disease.

Simple solutions like hand washing prior to delivering a baby, practicing exclusive breastfeeding, and improving nutrition can have an enormously positive impact on the
health of women and their families. We work with each individual community to affect long term behaviour change.

We believe our results bear this out, that working with communities to develop their own solutions is the most effective form of aid — a “hand up, not a hand out” approach. Our local staff provide advice, training and expertise, but it is up to the community to implement the initiatives and embrace change. Through this approach, positive health behaviours like hand washing and breastfeeding are sustained for generations to come”.
